Hello!
Wow, it's still hot and dry here although hopefully the 100 degree stuff is over with. It seems like there are as many birds at our bird bath drinking and taking baths as there are at the feeder. Tom picked up a nice blind at our outdoor/hunting supply store for about $100 and it even has a seat in it. At the moment is unfortunately also doubles as a steam room so we're hoping to use it for some photography at the feeder and the bird bath once it cools off enough to be in it without sweating.
Last issue I mentioned using axle grease to keep the raccoons off the bird feeder. One of our readers was kind enough to mention to me that this isn't a good thing to do when it gets colder as it can cause fur to mat and therefore remove the insulating properties so I wanted to pass that on. We don't want to harm the critters.
Speaking of birds we had some great opportunities in Newfoundland. There were more Gannets than in the past at Bird Rock at Cape St. Mary's and we had several good puffin opportunities. We had great weather with no swells at Witless Bay so we were able to get really close to the birds by boat.
We still have a few slots left for the Oregon Coast and our local workshops at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens and at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Please let us know right away if you are interested.
We're really excited about our schedule for 2008. It seems like 2008 is a long way off, but it's right around the corner and time to start making plans. See below for links to the details about our destinations. Let us know if you have any questions about them.
Enjoy your fall photography!
Best, Tom and Pat

18-250mm Tamron Lens
Tom is always looking for a chance to try out equipment that has received positive reviews. Two of our folks who were with us in Newfoundland had this new lens, the 18-250mm Tamron (a 28-350mm equivalent). Karen let Tom use this lens when we were photographing the gannets. For the price, this is a remarkable piece of equipment. It is lightweight and has better than average results, even at the long end of its range. It focuses at 19 inches throughout its entire focal length making it a great lens for macro photography as well, producing very nice images of iris.
The only downside is that this is not image stabilized. However, both Tamron and Sigma have introduced 18-200 image stabilized lenses. We'll be checking test reports on these lenses as well.
New Nikon and Canon Cameras
New models of cameras just keep coming. Both Nikon and Canon have recently announced new bodies. Nikon's models are the new full frame (FX format) D3 and the DX format D300. Canon has finally announced the 40D. Both cameras have Live View on their LCD screens as well as a number of other enhancements from previous models. There are good reviews of each of these cameras on DPReview.com.
