Improving Your Photography by Photographing Volleyball

We find it helpful to be able to sharpen our photographic skills before finding ourselves in the ‘real situation’. Tom has been photographing some of the sporting events at UTC, including women's volleyball. It turns out that photographing a fast moving indoor sport like volleyball can be a great way to practice the skills you use when photographing birds and animals. i.e., shooting action in low light situations and learning to anticipate where the action is going to be. The same would also be true of photographing basketball and other action sports.

When Do You Need a Model Release?

When photographing a person, it’s always polite to first ask them if you can photograph them and if they don’t want their photo taken, smile, say thank you and walk away. There are certain situations where this is difficult to do.

These two websites are a great resource for determining when you need a model release.

It is important to remember that people can still sue you for anything, whether you are legally right or not, so there is the practicality issue of how much of a hassle you are willing to put up with to use an image. Also these laws are not the same in all countries and even some states have variations on them.

It appears that if your purpose is artistic or documentary you will rarely need the subject's permission if they are in a public place. If you are taking stock photos you need a release since your buyers will probably want to use the photos commercially. Never tell a publisher or stock agency that you have a release if you don’t. The publisher is the party which is liable if a photo is published commercially when there is no release, not the photographer. But if you have told them you have a release and don’t, then you become the party that is liable.

Wilderness Wildlife Week

Each year the Office of Special Events in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, has a celebration called Winterfest. Wilderness Wildlife Week is a part of this celebration and it takes place this year from January 7-14. WWW consists of a week of workshops, lectures and slide programs presented by 'experts' in their field, all of which are free to attend. The subjects are varied but most center around nature or some aspect of the Smoky Mountains region. Motel rates are reduced this time of year making this an even better bargain. We will again be joining our friends Harold Stinnette, Kendall Chiles, and Danny Dempster in presenting a nature photography workshop from 9-1 on Saturday, January 7.  Tom and I will also present a program on Emotion in Photography from 11-12 on Sunday, January 8.  There are many more photography presentations throughout the week, all by fine photographers. For more information including a list of the programs and presenters, check out http://www.mypigeonforge.com/events_wwwclasslist.aspx

Some of our Photos are Now Available Online for Prints and Notecards

This is a work in progress, but click here to see the images we have available for printing.  We are adding images to this website on a regular basis.  We have a some galleries that are mainly fine art images and some that are local images that are more documentary than artistic.  We hope that you will go out to visit our site.
